Opening Ceremony: 13:30 - 14:00 GMT

Panel 1: 14:00 - 15:30 GMT
Contemporary Issues in Peacekeeping: Exploring Gender, Childhood & Community Engagement

This panel will bring together perspectives from policy makers, researchers, and peacekeepers to discuss recent findings that advance our knowledge on gender and community engagement in peacekeeping, identify existing gaps in this work especially when it comes to engaging with children and addressing child protection concerns, and learn from practice, training, and policy in this area.

Panel 2: 16:00 - 17:30 GMT
Exploring Gender, Childhood & Community Engagement in MONUSCO

This panel will build on the broader level discussion in the first panel and delve more deeply into the topic based on experiences in the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, MONUSCO. This case study will draw on experiences from research and civilian, police, and military peacekeeping efforts in DRC to discuss the specific challenges, opportunities, and lessons learned from the mission’s work on community engagement, child protection, and gender mainstreaming. Panelists will consider how peacekeepers address the specific ways in which gender and childhood are understood in the mission’s cultural contexts, the relationship between the different mission components in carrying out their work, and areas where further knowledge, policy, and training are needed to improve the mission’s ability to respond to gendered and child protection concerns.
